One of the unsung heroes in the song of my life is my elder brother Eric. Unlike Nick, my eldest brother, Eric and I grew up together but I was twelve years younger than he. When Nick was away at school, or undertaking National Service in the Royal Navy Eric was at home, sometimes minding me. Like all brothers we sometimes fought, and to him I must have seemed an indulged brat. Nevertheless he persisted in doing his best to hold our lives together despite my shenanigans.
One Christmas, shortly after I had acquired my first camera he gave me a book on photography by someone called Kurt Lindhof, or something similar. It was full of wonderful Leica pictures similar to the one above. As I struggled to understand the medium that book was my Bible. I’m unsure when it, and I parted company. I dearly wish it were still a part of my library.
