Amos: The New Tatler Arrives

Tatler June ')8

The remarkable Peter, and the beautiful Pat, popped by yesterday evening bringing the latest copy of ‘The Tatler’ for Irem; my Practical Photographer; a bottle of Gordon’s and two huge smiles.

Tatler is Irem’s favourite magazine, but I enjoy it too. The car reviews, by Emma Parker-Bowles, are always remarkable. This month’s is no exception. It’s supposedly about the ‘Bristol Fighter’ which is a Max Boxstrom designed aluminium super-car that does 0 – 60 in four seconds and, of course is hand-built.

Nearly the whole first column of the review is taken up with a biography of and eighteenth century eccentric, Jack Mytton. Emma writes:

“I think he is my perfect man. He spent his days thinking of ways to risk his life. He regularly injured himself hunting, attempting jumps that were clearly impossible. When bored, which was most of the time, he would zoom about at high speed in his carriage and deliberately turn it over. He appeared at one of his dinner parties mounted on his pet bear, Nell. Terrified guests leapt out of windows and Nell turned on him, and ate part of his leg.”

Apparently Mytton nearly died when he set himself on fire in an attempt to cure his hiccups, and sadly met his end in a debtor’s prison.

The Tatler also contains a rather a good spoof best man speech as if made by Prince Harry, penned by a mischievous Ticky Hedley-Dent.
