Jane Bown is the first photographer to be featured here in 2010

Pollination at a snail’s pace, maybe?

When Jane Bown studied photography at Guildford School of Art at first her teacher despaired. She simply seemed to have no interest in photographing using artificial light, which was what the curriculum demanded. Instead she set about photographing what was in front of her nose and to be found in the immediate neighbourhood.

Later, of course, she became known for her portraiture.

Photographing what’s there is a good discipline, and one often praised in camera club photography. The late Irving Penn is also a master of this genre producing elegance from the commonplace and familiar.

This week, in addition to photographing trees, I’m after capturing the commonplace.
