Photography: A Tale Of Two Lenses

Irem Bray ~ OM 50mm image ~ Copyright BRAY

My favorite subject . . .

Here are two images made under similar conditions within seconds of each other. Both were made with a 50mm Olympus Prime Lens. One lens, however, is the Zuiko 1.8 made for a 1970s OM-1. The other lens is the Zuiko D Macro, a lens made specially for digital photography with the four -thirds system.

It’s very clear at higher magnification that the Zuiko D is optically a far better lens. But the old OM Zuiko performs admirably and creates an image reminiscent of the photography of period in which the lens was manufactured. Indeed were I seeking to create a period photograph I may well choose to use this lens rather than the up-to-date one.
