Photography: Hatice’s Baby

Hatice and Cemil
Amazon has taken to going to a dancing class for a couple of hours on Sunday mornings so some days Irem and I use the time she’s there to visit friends. Today we visited our friend Hatice who had a baby boy a couple of months ago.
I was keen to attempt a Jane Bown style picture, using available light. Her images tend to have dark and unfocused backgrounds, although highly detailed backdrops that reveal, for example, an artist’s working context are by no means uncommon. Indeed some of her pictures in that vein are equal to those of Arnold Newman in their composition.
Unfortunately Harice’s place didn’t lend itself to this kind of treatment but fortunately there was a wonderful blank wall available as a backdrop.
Here she is with her tiny baby. I like this image because Cemil appears to be camera shy just as Hatice is getting into the session!
