Photography: Leica Economics, Leica M9

Were you to find an old copy of ‘The Blandfordian‘ from the 1960s you might locate within its covers superb photographic images taken by the late Nigel Port. These I later learned were taken with a Leica similar to the one below.

Not Nigel Port's Leica

Leica II

Nigel used the same camera throughout his life, (although he also shot with Pentax SLRs).

My own Leica IIIa got ‘bent’ some time ago and now requires a total rebuild. As for digital apart from the S1 the idea of Leica and digital seemed as separate as prunes with mashed potato.

Looks nice but needs rebuilding :-(

Leica IIIc, Looks Great But Needs Rebuilding :-(

But now, after some brave attempts with the Leica M8 and M8a the Wetzlar company have come up trumps with the world’s smallest digital full 35mm frame camera, and what a joy it is :-)

Smaller than its M8 predecessor, (which was by no means a large bodied camera), the M9 fits snugly in the hand and delivers in spades.

Ken Rockwell likes it. Leica aficionados from such web sites as Luminous Landscape simply love it. Irwin Putts is, of course, in his element.

In the land of ‘make-believe’ or ‘might-have-been’ I could have saved many thousands of dollars and pounds had I bought a Leica M3, or M2, in my late teens and shot film with it until today with the purchase of an M9.

My M3 lenses would be as good today on the M9 as on the day when I bought them for film photography.

Ho hum ~ it was never to be?
