Photography: Light and Shade, Moments in Time.

Shot near a window, Jane Bown style maybe?

Jane Bown likes to photograph her subjects by windowlight. Using a Rolleiflex or Olympus OM1 she aims to focus on the eyes. Hypnotists say  that eyes are the windows of the mind. Others claim they are the windows to the soul. It’s true there’s something mysterious about the eyes, but on the other hand many photographers, such as Gary Winogrand, also hold that a photograph represents what the viewer sees. It’s not really even as complex as being the recording of a moment in time.

This image was a test shot taken with the Olympus E-400 fitted with my M42 Flektogon 35mm. It’s about one stop ‘overexposed’ to produce a high key effect. I love the colours that the Kodak sensor in the E-400 produces, as well as the camera’s size. If only the viewfinder was larger I would use it more.

The Kodak sensor in the E-400 produces wonderful
subtle colours straight from in-camera .jpgs.
