Photography: Olympus E-3 Image Stabilization

Off Road And Image Stabilized!

This may not seem a remarkable image but it’s not what it seems. Irem is driving our jeep at speed up a deeply rutted track. I’m shooting with the Olympus E-3 and struggling to keep her face in focus. The lens is an OM Zuiko 50mm 1.8 at f1.8, the camera is calculating the shutter speed perfectly exposing Irem’s face at 1/320th second. The result is one of several in camera .jpgs taken in the space of a few seconds.

You may think I have purposely printed the best of the images here, and this result isn’t typical. In a sense you’re right for this image has the best focus of the set but all of the images are tack sharp in some part of the frame, so the IS is doing its job.

Some will think that 1/320th is fast enough to freeze any movement with a 50mm lens. From past experience I’m pretty sure I couldn’t get this result with my E-400s, or any of my full frame film cameras.
