Photography: Relationships In Subject Matter

When I discovered Jane Bown’s images I was immediately taken with the quality of her early college work. In those days she used a Rollieflex and was taking pictures on Dartmoor, in the U.K.

What struck me about the pictures are that they depict a relationship between people and nature, rather than being landscape images per se. Even her photograph, or rather portrait, of the Molly the cow is an image of domestic livestock.
