Pulling Or Screwing?

Bottle Of Wine With Screw Cap

“Some years ago, in Australia, some tests were done with screw top wine bottles instead of the traditional cork. This was the ‘Stelvin Cap’ and it was extremely effective. Blind tasting with wine experts indicated that, on the whole, the wine from bottles with the screw cap were superior to wines with bottles with corks.”

EDWARD DE BONO

I for one like to experience the joy of pulling the cork from a good bottle of wine. I also enjoy drinking it. A glass or two, and no more than three, of red wine a day may help protect against certain cancers and heart disease, and also has a positive effect on cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Red wines contain several antioxidants that keep your system clean. This in turn leads to better health.

Although many Turks are practicing Moslems and do not drink alcohol, Turkey has an established wine industry and Turkish wines are remarkably good value.

Here, as elsewhere, screw caps are associated with cheaper wines which lack the piquancy of better vintages. This should not deter you from trying them. Some screw capped wine is remarkably good. Those that are not so excellent are usually at least fair to middlin’ and anyway will still get you sloshed!

A Mediteranean diet such as that eaten by Turks has been established in long term research to be the the healthiest in the world. Even so Dr. Walter C. Willett, of the Harvard Medical School advises taking a mult-vitamin suppliment.

My advice: Also have a noggin of excellent Turkish red wine, preferably from a bottle with a cork. It will taste a lot better than the vitamin pill and put you in a mellow state of mind!

Surely, that’s a bottle of white wine. Shouldn’t it be red if drinking red wine is the healthy option?
