In Search Of The Sophisticated Woman . . .

Simple, Timeless, Elegant.

In his twilight years my eldest brother Nick once remarked: “of course you had old parents.” I confess that I never really appreciated that they were old parents until I came into my teens when my father’s and mother’s idea of what constituted fashion, or good taste, clashed violently with what was occurring during the 1960s.

Something of their ideas must have rubbed off since over the years I appear to have collected a number of books by photographers who started taking pictures during the 1920s, or 1930s. It’s clear from looking at them that until relatively recently women’s fashion had an elegance about it that simply isn’t offered in today’s world. Women simply don’t dress like the mother of my childhood anymore. It’s nothing to do with feminism, or emancipation but rather a matter of style and sophistication. Where might classic elegance be found today?

No sooner did the thought pass through my mind than I caught sight of Irem and Amazon outside the house. I really didn’t have to look very far, did I?
