The Sugar Festival
Today is the ‘Sugar Festival’. This day marks the conclusion of the fasting of Ramadan. Children come from door-to-door and are given sweets. Traditionally these are home baked, but these days they are frequently purchased from confectioners.
Coincidentally this year the Sugar Festival also falls on Amazon’s birthday. She is two years old.
Unfortunately all of us have colds. She is very patient with her snuffles, but parents reading this will know the agony of listening to a child struggling against congested breathing in their sleep.
I was so sensitive to Amazon that I think I slept with one ear open and one eye closed.
This morning we found that it had been raining all night. We are currently having work done on our driveway so currently it’s easy to bring mud in on our boots from outside. Moreover will we will not see our builders today because they will spend the Sugar Festival with their families.
The rain brings immediacy and vibrance to Amos. Many Turkish people have come here to celebrate the Sugar Festival.
Kindly note: The Turkish word for ‘holiday’ is ‘bayram’, and the word for ‘sugar’ is ‘şeker’ But the ‘Sugar Festival’ has an additional letter added from the Extended Turkish Alphabet. The Sugar Festival is translated as ‘Şeker Bayramı’.
